Vol. 262 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals in his Department for a group water scheme for the Castlecuff and Coolagh areas, Clonaslee, County Laois; and, if so, the present position in the matter.

These areas are included in the proposed Ballykaneen, Clonaslee group water supply scheme, survey sheets for which were recently received in my Department. I understand that the group have accepted the Laois County Council's offer to design the scheme which will be a mains extension, and the documents have been passed to the council.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government when sanction will be given for the extension to the Moylough regional scheme from Rushes Cross, Annaghmore, to the main road at Laught as submitted by Galway County Council.

Additional technical information which was requested from the local authority to enable this proposal to be further examined is awaited.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government the position regarding each proposal for a group water scheme in County Galway.

This information is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received proposals from Cork County Council (West) for the extension of Clonakilty regional water scheme to Ballymacowen, Darrara Cross and other local areas; and when he intends to sanction them.

No proposal has been received in my Department for an extension of this scheme to Ballymacowen. With the exception of a proposed extension to Darrara Cross received recently and at present being examined, other proposals received have been referred back to the local authority for reconsideration on economic grounds or to investigate the possibility of having them carried out by group co-operative effort.

This scheme will cost £500,000 and as the extension is near the reservoir and having regard to the fact that there are charges made on the Cork County Council, will the Minister not consider sanctioning this scheme? It is no use having a water supply scheme if it is not being distributed to the people.

The Deputy will appreciate that the Minister must have regard to the finances available to him and make allocations accordingly. There will always be financial limits and, while it would be desirable to sanction all schemes immediately, it is not possible to do so now, nor will it probably ever be possible to sanction all schemes in that way. I would remind the Deputy that good progress with regard to water supply schemes has been made in his area.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the long delay in proceeding with the group water scheme at Rigsdale, Ballinhassig, County Cork.

The delay in proceeding with this scheme, known as Rising Sun group water supply scheme, is due to difficulty in obtaining a suitable source. Quotations for the necessary materials, et cetera, have now been obtained by the group and costings prepared indicate that the proposal will be economic.

Can the Minister state when it will be possible to obtain a suitable source? I am sure that the difficulties in this case apply to many other schemes in Cork. The group water scheme system is falling down badly and I think the Minister must accept some responsibility in the matter.

I cannot accept what the Deputy has said. Considerable progress is being made on group schemes and this applies in particular to the Deputy's county.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has received a proposal for a group water supply scheme at Curryglass/Farthingville, Rathluirc, County Cork; and, if so, when he expects that work on the scheme will commence.

A proposal for a scheme to serve 26 houses has been received. A grant of £1,846 has been allocated and work should commence shortly.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has received a proposal for the provision of an extension of the sewerage scheme to cater for five houses at Dromina, County Cork; and, if so, when he expects that the work will be carried out.

A proposal submitted for this extension was considered uneconomical and the local authority were so informed.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position with regard to the provision of sewerage schemes at (a) Castlemagner and (b) Newtown-Shandrum, County Cork.

There are no proposals before my Department for a sewerage scheme at Castlemagner.

Technical aspects of a proposed sewerage scheme for Newtownshandrum are the subject of correspondence with the local authority.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will approve the contract documents for the proposed sewerage scheme at Rathcline, Lanesboro, County Longford.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to his previous question of 24th February, 1972, I approved contract documents for the Rathcline section of Lanesboro sewerage scheme on 2nd February, 1972.

Tenders for the work, which were submitted to my Department on 26th instant, are being examined.
