Vol. 265 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limits.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give full responsibility to local authorities for the fixing of speed limits.

Local authorities are responsible for the erection of signs to indicate the existence of legal speed limits. These limits are specified in the Road Traffic Acts or in regulations made by the Minister under these Acts. I have no power to devolve on local authorities the fixing of speed limits.

In view of the delays involved, and in view of the seriousness of this question which involves the safety of children and others, would the Minister not give himself this power? Since they are in government at the moment would the Minister not introduce legislation to give himself this power?

When this is being reconsidered it might possibly be necessary to alter the Road Traffic Act for the purpose of doing something like that. It might not be desirable because it might establish different standards in different counties. If the present arrangement is worked properly I think it is better as it is.

Could the Minister do something to speed up decisions on this item?

I will try to do that.

At the moment the delays involved are undesirable.

Several years.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction a speed limit for Carriganima village, County Cork.

The imposition of a speed limit at Carriganima is being considered as part of a review of speed limits in County Cork which is nearing completion.
