Vol. 266 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

28.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk at Fassaroe Park, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

Provision of a kiosk at Fassaroe Park is not considered warranted at present. The matter will however, be reviewed in the light of any further housing development in the general area.

I have had a previous communication about this matter staling that the number of households in the area would not be sufficient to maintain the kiosk. At the moment there are 84 households and 42 flatlets and Bray UDC have acquired 30 acres for the construction of 300 additional houses in the future. Would the Parliamentary Secretary not consider it necessary to have a review undertaken immediately?

As I stated in my reply, the matter will be reviewed in the light of any future housing developments in the general area.

29.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to erect a public telephone kiosk near Coolick National School, Kilcummin, Killarney, County Kerry, in an area which is three miles away from the nearest telephone service.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Coolick where there is no post office is not envisaged under the extended rural kiosk programme.

30.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider the provision of a public telephone kiosk at Drom village, Templemore, County Tipperary, as a result of the closure of the sub-post office there.

The sub-post office at Drom was closed in 1968. The programme for the provision of kiosks in rural areas is limited to areas where the post office call office is used fairly extensively. Accordingly, provision of a kiosk is not proposed in this case.

31.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have a telephone kiosk erected at Convent Hill, Bandon, County Cork.

The Convent Hill area is served by a telephone kiosk at the Town Hall which is not extensively used. Provision of an additional kiosk in the general area is not considered warranted.

32.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the cabling scheme to serve the Bray area, including the installation of the additional equipment at the local automatic exchange, was commenced; and when it will be functional.

Two main cabling schemes to provide for subscriber development in Bray commenced on the 9th April, 1973, and are expected to be completed in about two months. Extensions of these cables will be carried out as required. Work on the installation of additional automatic equipment in Bray exchange is expected to commence in September next, and the equipment is due to be brought into service about April, 1974.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary in a position to inform me of the number of new telephones which will then be available in this vastly expanding area?

I am not in a position to tell the Deputy now. I will communicate his query to the Minister and I am sure the information will be communicated to the Deputy.
