Vol. 266 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Peatland Reserves

46.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the total area of peatland in Ireland; the estimated reserves of commercially useful peat by weight; how long these will last at the present rate of production; and if he has any plans for bogs that have been exhausted.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that it is impossible to give with any degree of accuracy the total areas of peatland in Ireland or the reserves of commercially useful peat by weight.

Bord na Móna which is working most of the large bog areas suitable for mechanisation estimate that the 130,000 acres being exploited have peat deposits with an average life of at least 25 years. Preliminary consideration is at present being given as to the best use to be made of these peatlands when Bord na Móna's production activities have ceased.

I have been told—I do not know if it is true—that in the case of certain electricity generating stations it would be cheaper to close them down and build new ones within a very short number of years rather than go on transporting turf to the existing stations.

I have not got that information here.

The Minister had better look it up.

I do not think that kind of attitude suitable to the deliberations of this House. If the Deputy wants specific information he should put down a question instead of being smart alecky across the floor of the House.

The remaining questions will be taken on the next sitting day of the House.
