Vol. 266 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fluke Disease.

21.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount lost to the agricultural sector of the national economy through fluke disease in Irish livestock.

There is no way of accurately estimating the financial loss to the agricultural sector caused by liver fluke but it is thought to be about £13 million per year at present. Most of the loss is due to the sub-clinical form of the disease. Furthermore, variable factors such as weather and soil conditions have an important bearing on the level of incidence in any given period.
