Vol. 267 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Land Distribution.

50.

asked the Minister for Lands the acreage of land in the hands of the Land Commission for distribution in County Galway; the areas where these lands are held; the year these lands were taken over by the Land Commission; and when it is proposed to allot them.

(Cavan): At present the Land Commission have in their possession in County Galway over 22,000 acres of which about 7,700 acres are classified as arable. Land Commission operations in this particular county are heavily concentrated and the area on hands comprises, inter alia, numerous small holdings, and remnants of larger estates. In these circumstances, the Deputy will appreciate that the extraction of the detailed information requested would entail a disproportionate expenditure of time and labour which would not be warranted. If, however, there are any special districts in which the Deputy is interested I can arrange to have the particulars he requires sent to him.

I wonder would I be correct in saying that some of the land held by the Land Commission in the west was taken over from migrants. These lands are still in the hands of the Land Commission and surely, therefore, that information must be available. It should be easy to get the information considering the time the migrants were transferred up to the midland counties.

(Cavan): If the Deputy were to put to me a specific question in relation to a specific estate it would be comparatively easy, but the terms of the Deputy's question are so general that to give the information would involve a lot of work. As I have said, if the Deputy puts a specific question to me, either in the House or through correspondence, it will be dealt with.

The time allotted to questions has expired. The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper. The Chair has no discretion to extend the time allotted to questions.
