Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Note Redemption.

90.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of Irish 10/- notes not yet exchanged for decimal coinage at the end of June, 1973; and the number exchanged in each of the months January, February, March, April, May and June, 1973.

The number of 10/-notes outstanding on 30th June, 1973, was 1,233,803.

The number of such notes redeemed by the Central Bank in each of the months from January to June, 1973 was as follows:

January

4,114

February

2,079

March

3,114

April

1,103

May

3,054

June

1,095

———

Total

14,559

———

Could I ask the Minister if the outstanding notes are still redeemable?

Would the Minister say whether or not the changeover from a 10/- note to a 50p coin has worked satisfactorily?

It all depends on what your test of satisfaction might be?

From the point of view of the coinage?

I do not know that it has created any problems.

To that extent the Minister's party's attack on the proposal when it was going through this House was erroneous.

No. I said I am not aware that it has created any problems, that they have not come to my official notice.

But it would have been brought to the Minister's notice by now if it had created any problems.

Possibly not. There are many problems crowding in on my desk.

Could I ask the Minister the approximate value of the old 10/- note on the market at the moment?

That is a separate question.

Fifty pence.

Has it increased in value?

Not that I am aware of.

Like the half crown?

It is very exceptional for paper money to increase in value, whatever about coins.
