Vol. 269 No. 9

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Garda Patrols.

18.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will provide increased Garda patrols in Chapelizod, Dublin, especially on the north side of the River Liffey.

Cavan) (for the Minister for Justice): An assessment of what patrolling is required in particular areas is a matter for decision by the Garda authorities. I am informed by the Commissioner that the Garda authorities are satisfied that present patrolling in Chapelizod is reasonable, having regard to other demands on available resources. The situation will, however, be kept under review.

(Dublin Central): Is the Minister aware that, apart from Chapelizod, all over Dublin city there are not sufficient police to patrol as is shown by the number of crimes being committed? I am surprised to hear that the Commissioner is satisfied there are sufficient police in Dublin because I think the view is to the contrary.

(Cavan): This question applies specifically to Chapelizod and not to any other area in Dublin.

(Dublin Central): I could give the Minister examples of other districts.

Your party are responsible for it.

Is the Minister aware that since the police station in Chapelizod was closed down and transferred to Ballyfermot, patrols seem to have declined?

(Cavan): I am aware that the station in Chapelizod was closed on 24th May, 1971, and that the entire staff were transferred to Ballyfermot. I am not aware that the patrols have been reduced.

The point I am trying to establish is that foot patrols have been decreased and an extra car has been provided which, apparently, is not satisfactory.

We cannot resolve this matter.

(Cavan): The information which I have on the file does not bear that out.
