Vol. 270 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grand Canal Legislation.

28.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when he intends to introduce legislation regarding the Grand Canal, Dublin.

29.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if any plans or proposals have been submitted to his Department for the further development or alteration of the Grand Canal; or if he expects any such proposals.

With your permission a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 28 and 29 together.

As I indicated in reply to a question on this subject on 1st November, 1973, an ad hoc group, comprised of representatives of the Departments concerned, CIE and Bórd Fáilte are at present examining certain aspects of the proposed transfer of the canals to the Office of Public Works. On receipt of the group's report, legislative proposals relating to the future of the canals will be formulated.

I would also refer the Deputies to my reply to a question on 21st February, 1974, in which I indicated that, in accordance with the provisions of section 23 of the Transport Act, 1958, CIE have published notice of their intention to close to navigation that part of the Grand Canal from Griffith Bridge to James's Street harbour. I have been informed by CIE that the board have at present no other plans or proposals for the further development or alteration of the Grand Canal.

Is it not true that legislation was ready when the Minister took office? What is the cause of the delay?

No, it was not.

It was as near ready as made no matter.

The matter is still under discussion with the Office of Public Works, Bord Fáilte and my Department.

It seems as if this will go on forever.

Would the Minister say that the fact he has not mentioned a very ambitious proposal for the Robertstown area of the Grand Canal is to be taken as an indication that he is not aware of these things? I know there was close harmony between his predecessor and the people involved in this.

No statement please.

I trust that that harmony still exists since the Minister took over.

That harmony still exists.

Could I ask the Minister for an assurance that the Grand Canal will not be allowed to fall into a state of disrepair but that it will be maintained in a navigable state?

Yes, Bord Fáilte and I are very keen to ensure that it is maintained in a navigable state.
