Vol. 270 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Assistance for Hotels.

30.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that hotels have closed and that several leading hotels, particularly in Dublin, are in danger of closing; and, if so, if he will make funds available to Bord Fáilte to grant them temporary assistance.

Part of the remedy for problems of the hotel industry lies in an increase in tourist numbers. Bord Fáilte are confident that the upswing in tourism revenue which commenced last year will be maintained and I recently authorised a major promotional drive by the board. I am also considering what other form of assistance would be appropriate but I am not yet able to announce my decision.

Is the Minister aware that such famous hotels as the Gresham Hotel are at risk and that staff have been given notice?

In the case of a very big hotel which closed down late last year I saw in the paper last week that it is being opened again as a hotel. I think this is a mark of confidence in tourism by somebody.
