Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Steel Processing Plants.

198.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is intended to encourage the setting up of steel processing plants in Ireland for the production of steel rods, bars, tin plate and sheets from raw material imported from (a) Britain (b) Europe and (c) other sources; if any approach has been made by foreign industrialists for the establishment for such an enterprise; and, if so, the country from which the inquiry came, the possible locations, the exact type of product involved and the employment potential.

Any proposals for the expansion of the steel industry in Ireland through the establishment of steel processing plants will be considered by the Industrial Development Authority and, if they are beneficial to the country, will be eligible to benefit from the incentives available to industry.

Save in very exceptional circumstances it is not the practice to state whether or not proposals have been submitted to the IDA for particular industrial projects. In any event even where particular proposals are received an announcement would not be made until a final decision had been taken by the promoters.
