Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bog Development.

130.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if there are any proposals in his Department for the extension of development in the bogs at Bangor and Ballycroy, County Mayo.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that they are treating the Bangor bogs, that is, Bangor and Munhin, as a reserve for the production of milled peat for transfer to Bellacorick power station in due time. This will have the effect of prolonging the life of the power station by providing continued supplies of milled peat as the areas near Bellacorick are cut away. Development is at present proceeding on Munhin and it is planned to produce milled peat initially in 1975 and 1976.

The areas around Ballycroy will be included in investigations which the board have already begun into the potential of bog areas not so far approved for development.

131.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if there are any proposals in his Department for the development of the Goulawn bog, Cashel, Connemara, County Galway.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that they have no plans for the development of the Goulawn bog, Cashel, Connemara, but it will be included in investigations which the board have already begun into the potential of bog areas which had previously been regarded as incapable of economic development.
