Vol. 272 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Airport Proposal.

61.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the progress that has been made in providing an airport at Strandhill, Sligo; and if land is available for such an airport.

There is no proposal at present before my Department for the establishment of an aerodrome in the Sligo area.

Any such project, including acquisition of land, is primarily a matter for local initiative and enterprise. If a potential site is selected, I will gladly arrange for its inspection by an officer of my Department to determine its suitability for the establishment of an aerodrome. A site at Strandhill was inspected by an officer of my Department in November, 1969, at the request of a local development company. The site was considered operationally suitable with certain reservations. I am not aware of any recent developments in regard to this site.
