Vol. 272 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Strength.

87.

asked the Minister for Justice the total strength of the Garda Síochána at 14th March, 1973, and at the latest date for which figures are available.

The total strength on the 14th March, 1973 was 7,526 and the total strength on 31st March, 1974, which is the latest date for which complete figures are available, was 7,906.

In view of the fact that this represents an increase in Garda strength and that the reason for the increase is mainly Border duties, would the Minister ensure that for those sent to Border areas—and in the main they are sent to what used to be small Garda stations——

That is a separate question.

——suitable accommodation would be provided?

I would be very anxious that adequate and suitable accommodation would be available at all Garda stations.

The Minister made an announcement recently as to the induction of 500 new gardaí into the service. Can the Minister say if the quota has been completed and, if not, how many have, in fact, been inducted?

I am afraid I have not got the information with me. I will give the information to the Deputy by way of letter. Some of the extra 500 have been inducted but only in preliminary batches. The vast majority have yet to be recruited.
