Vol. 272 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disablement Pension Award.

13.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he considers that the award of 26p per week disablement pension or a lump sum of £126.00 to a person (details supplied) in Castletownroche, County Cork, who has five dependent children and is unable to secure employment because of his disablement, is realistic by any form of assessment; and if he will take suitable action in the matter.

The award of disablement benefit made to the person referred to by the Deputy is the maximum which may be granted in his case under the Social Welfare (Occupational Injuries) Act, 1966, having regard to the extent of his disablement resulting from his occupational accident on the 23rd December, 1969. The award, which is a final one, was made following his examination on the 20th November, 1973, by a medical referee who assessed the degree of disablement resulting from the accident at 3 per cent. The award was confirmed by an appeals officer following an oral hearing of the claimant's appeal on the 14th March, 1974. The appeals officer's decision is final and conclusive and I have no power to alter it.
