Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Petrochemical Industry.

60.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that of the nine EEC countries only Denmark and Ireland do not possess a native petrochemical industry; and if, in view of the urgent importance of such an industry, he will state the action he intends to take in the matter.

Apart from Nitrigin Éireann Teoranta, Ireland does not possess a petrochemical industry.

The possibilities of creating a native petrochemical industry in Ireland, either by expansion and development of Nitrigin Éireann Teoranta or by the establishment of new plants, are kept under constant review. The position is at present being re-examined in the light of the most recent developments in regard to supplies of petroleum and the possibility that exploration in Irish waters will result in the discovery of oil or of further deposits of gas.
