Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Suckling Herd Size.

2.

andMr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the serious reduction in the suckling herd; if he has any estimate of the extent of the reduction; and if he will state the action he proposes to take in the matter.

I am not aware of any reduction in the size of the suckling herd; in fact, the statistical indications are that the herd this year is at a record level.

I am sure the Minister is aware of the uneasiness in the minds of the farmers owing to the price of calves.

Of course, I am aware of that but there is no indication of a reduction in the herd size.

Could I ask the Minister to scrap that scheme altogether until an outlet is found for the already increased amount of what I would call poor and small cattle in the country? The Minister should direct his intention to finding a market for what is already there. Knowing the opinions of farmers, I think they would be happy if that scheme were scrapped altogether.

The Deputy is aware that that is a separate question.
