Vol. 275 No. 8

Ceisteanna——Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Islands Electricity Supply.

134.

asked the Mini ster for Transport and Power whether there are any plans for the provision of electricity in the homes on Inis treabhair Island, Lettermore, County Galway.

I am informed by the ESB that the provision of electricity supply to the householders or Inistreabhair would be so costly that the appropriate special service charges would be completely prohibitive. In addition, there would be considerable technical problems associated with the laying and maintenance of the necessary submarine cables which would make this method of supply less reliable than if the electricity were generated locally.

Special arrangements for the provision of local generators have been made by Roinn na Gaeltachta for Gaeltacht islands in pursuance of the national language policy. However, I am informed by Roinn na Gaeltachta that because of the small number of inhabitants on Inistreabhair the provision of a generator would not be practicable.

135.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will indicate the islands off the west coast of Galway that will be granted electricity supply; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that terms for supply under the final phase of the rural electrification scheme in the Lettermore-Rosmuc rural areas will be quoted to householders on Denish Island off Lettermore, and Oileán Mór off Rosmuc in the very near future. Supply will be extended to those who accept the terms quoted in the course of the development work in the area. Terms for supply will also be quoted to householders on Omey Island west of Clifden in the near future.
