Vol. 275 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Garda Station.

176.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to reports concerning the condition of Eglinton Garda station, Galway city; if he intends to have repairs carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Mr. Kenny

I have seen the reports referred to and I accept that conditions at the station are not satisfactory having regard particularly to the number of men now based there. A contract for the improvement of the cells has already been placed and the Commissioners of Public Works are examining, as a matter of urgency, the question of further improvement works at the station. These works must, however, be regarded only as an interim measure since it seems fairly clear that the final solution to the problem will be in the complete reconstruction of the building. This of course would be a job of considerable magnitude and would have to be done in stages. Detailed examination of the proposal will be pressed forward as much as possible.

The remaining questions will appear on next Tuesday's Order Paper unless Deputies request replies which may be obtained in the general office.
