Vol. 276 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sand Dune Stabilisation.

21.

asked the Minister for Lands the proposals his Department have for the stabilisation of sand dunes by the planting of suitable grass or by some form of fertilisation.

(Cavan): The Land Commission do not operate any general scheme for the stabilisation of sand dunes.

Occasionally, however, where blowing sand constitutes a threat to agricultural land they undertake remedial action generally by way of planting marram grass.

Erosion as a result of tidal action is not dealt with by the Land Commission under the Coast Protection Act of 1963; it is a matter for the local authority in the first instance.

If the Deputy has a particular case in mind perhaps he would supply details and I will arrange to have inquiries made.

I have seen trees which were planted by the Land Commission being eroded in this way. Surely the Department would do something in such a case to protect these trees?

(Cavan): Of course they would, and they do.
