Vol. 276 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waste Oil Disposal.

96.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has made any progress regarding the disposal of waste oil since the matter was last raised by way of question.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to his question on the subject on 14th May, 1974, in which it was indicated that waste disposal control is the responsibility of local authorities. Proposals for legislation to make better provision for the control of water pollution, including control of the discharge of wastes into watercourses, are being prepared in my Department. Consideration is also being given by my Department to the further measures which may be necessary to comply with an EEC directive on the disposal of waste oils which was approved by the Council of Ministers on 7th November, 1974.

I may add that I have no evidence that the disposal of waste oil causes a significant environmental problem here at present.

In view of the fact that this product is so expensive would it not be economical to deal with this on a national basis and have this waste recycled?

No, my information is that it would not.

Would that be on the costings for last May?

The most recent information at my disposal is that it would not be economical.
