Vol. 276 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Imports.

109.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received reports of large scale illegal imports of butter from the Six Counties; if so, the action he proposes to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The answer is "no", but I am aware of newspaper reports on the subject. The customs staff are alive to the danger of butter smuggling and are taking all possible steps to curb the illegal traffic.

May I ask the Minister whether, in accordance with the reasoning he applied in the case of petrol, he would now propose to reduce the price of butter to avoid leakage across the Border?

Would the Minister expect, after the massive price inceeding crease yesterday, that these illegal imports would be expected to increase enormously?
