Vol. 276 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retirement Age Proposals.

41.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has made a decision with regard to proposals to fix retirement ages for women and men at 60 and 65, respectively.

The question of retirement ages in employment is a matter for settlement by free collective bargaining.

In so far as the Deputy may be referring to a national superannuation policy the matter is one for the Minister for Social Welfare.

Discussions are continuing in international organisations on ideas for flexibility of working life, including the desirability or otherwise of a fixed retiring age. I am following these discussions with interest.
