Vol. 281 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ordnance Survey Maps.

19.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is satisfied with the accuracy of ordnance survey maps on the larger scale; if his Department accept any responsibility for errors found in them; and if there are any proposals for the short-term revision of these maps.

The accuracy of ordnance survey maps is considered satisfactory. Many of the large scale maps are, however, considerably out of date. Implementation of a mapping programme designed to up-date these maps was approved in 1968 and is expected to be completed in about 25 years. The director of ordnance survey is responsible for the accuracy and maintenance of the ordnance survey maps and for the implementation of the mapping programme. This programme involves the survey of all urban areas at a scale of 1 : 1000 (63 ins to 1 mile approx), an overall survey of the country at 1 : 2500 scale (25 ins to 1 mile approx) and the production of 1 : 5000 (12 ins to 1 mile approx) scale plans which will include contours at 5 meter intervals.

20.

asked the Minister for Finance if the Ordnance Survey Office has any plans to superimpose the international grid for identification purposes on its maps and thus increase the versatility of the maps.

No, as the requirements for an international grid which would be suitable for all parts of the world have yet to be defined.
