Vol. 281 No. 7

Ceiseanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Live Pig Exports.

16.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he approves of pigs being exported live at the present time; and the effect this will have on the operation of bacon factories.

If there were no subsidies payable to the pig industry in Northern Ireland there could be no objection to the export of live pigs across the land frontier.

Substantial Government aid has, however, recently been given to the Northern Ireland pig industry and this could have serious implications for bacon factories here. Such Government aid is contrary to the EEC pig-meat regime and has been reported to the EEC Commission in Brussels, who are investigating the matter.
