Vol. 285 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Life Expectancy.

38.

asked the Minister for Health if he will indicate the life expectancy as between men and women in the UK and in Ireland.

Based on the 1966 census of population and on mortality data for the three years 1965 to 1967 the life expectancy at birth in the State was 68.6 years for men and 72.9 years for women.

The corresponding figures for the United Kingdom were:

68.7 years for men and 74.9 years for women in England and Wales;

66.6 years for men and 72.5 years for women in Scotland;

68.1 years for men and 73.3 years for women in Northern Ireland.

Life expectancy figures for Ireland based on the 1971 census of population and mortality data for the threeyear period 1970-72 are at present being compiled in the Central Statistics Office. It is expected that they will be published in about six months time.

Will the Minister state what age range has been taken into account? For example, is it from the age of 50 upwards or is it from one year upwards?

I am sorry I have not that information.

It was only an aside.
