Vol. 285 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Stations.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance if the purchase of a site for a Garda station at Kiltimagh, County Mayo is complete; and when plans will be prepared and tenders sought for the erection of the station.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance when the Cottage Hospital, Kiltimagh, County Mayo is expected to be vacated by the Gardaí at present in occupation and when it is proposed to build a new Garda station.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 28 together.

The existing Garda Station at Kiltimagh which is held on lease is reasonably satisfactory for its purpose and normally would continue to be used for Garda purposes for several more years. In view, however, of the desire of the Western Health Board to secure the building for welfare needs the Commissioners of Public Works have been searching for a site with a view to the erection of a new station. Agreement has now been reached on terms for the purchase of an acceptable site and the planning of the new building will be put in hands as soon as possible.

At this point it is not possible to say when the new station will be ready for occupation but it is unlikely that it will be less than two years from now.

Would it be possible for the Parliamentary Secretary to indicate the date or dates on which Questions Nos. 27 and 28 were entered or submitted?

I am afraid the Deputy will have to make this inquiry at the General Office. I am concerned only with giving the reply to the questions on the current Order Paper.

A Cheann Comhairle, is there a format by which I can find out? My understanding was that normally if one asked a Minister he would be in a position to say whether a question was entered on such and such a date. Very often something happens after the submission of a question. I am deliberately inquiring here and is it possible for me to be informed as to the dates on which Questions Nos. 27 and 28 were entered?

I am sure the information is in the General Office in this House.

29.

asked the Minister for Finance when work will commence on the erection of a new Garda station at Millstreet, County Cork; and the reason for the delay.

Tenders for the erection of a new Garda station at Millstreet, County Cork are being examined and it is hoped that a contract will be placed and work commenced within the next month or so. The delay in placing the contract has been due to the difficulty encountered in procuring suitable premises for use as a Garda station and married quarters while the existing building is being demolished and the new station built on the site.
