Vol. 290 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford School.

2.

asked the Minister for Education the proposals before his Department for the extension of Davidstown National School, County Wexford; and when sanction will be granted.

3.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the very serious overcrowding problem that exists in Davidstown National School, Enniscorthy, County Wexford; and if he will take immediate action to remedy the position.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will take Questions Nos. 2 and 3 together. My Department have already approved an extension scheme comprising an additional classroom, a general purposes room and staff room at Davidstown National School subject to a favourable report being received from the Commissioners of Public Works on the feasibility of carrying out the scheme. The Commissioners' report is awaited and it is not possible at this stage to say when the work may commence.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary fully aware of the terrible overcrowding that exists in this school? Classes are now being taught in a passage of the school. Will he make some arrangement to have at least one additional classroom provided while the extension is awaited?

My understanding is that temporary accommodation is available for classes in the old schoolhouse some distance away which is being renovated so that it can be used in the meantime. The Board of Works will be reporting their findings to us as quickly as possible and we will then be able to proceed.
