asked the Minister for Education if he will seek an extension of the public water supply to Doolin national school, County Clare.
Written Answers. - Clare School Water Supply.
The Deputy may be aware that, in a statement which I made in the Dáil in October, 1973— Volume 268, of the Official Report— I said that grants would not in future be made for extensive reconstruction or improvement of one-teacher or two-teacher national schools.
Doolin national school is a two-teacher school, and an application for a grant towards the cost of the installation of a water-flushed system of sanitation, together with smaller improvements, has recently been under consideration in my Department. I am advised that the total cost of all the works suggested would be in the region of £5,500. The provision of water-flushed sanitation would account for over £4,000 of that amount.
I regret that I am not in a position to sanction a grant for improvements of so costly a nature, but I would be prepared to consider the question of allowing a grant towards the cost of such works as might be deemed essential for the continued operation of the school over a period of years. I am arranging that the Commissioners of Public Works will advise my Department in that regard.
