Vol. 297 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Licences.

18.

asked the Minister for Fisheries the number of salmon licences issued for the Dublin Bay catchment area on an annual basis; the number of such licences in use at present; the cost per licence; and the areas in which the fishermen avail themselves of the licences.

I presume the Deputy is referring to commercial licences issued in the Dublin Fishery District. Under the terms of the Control of Fishing for Salmon Order, 1974, the number of licences which the Dublin Board may issue each year is limited to 18 drift net, 11 draft net and one loop net. In the 1977 season the Dublin Board have allocated 16 drift net licences, for which the cost is £50 per licence, and eight draft net licences, for which the cost is £30 per licence.

The licences do not stipulate where fishing may take place but the areas most commonly availed of by the fishermen are Dublin Bay in the vicinity of Ringsend, Broadmeadow off Malahide and offshore of Bray and Wicklow town.
