Vol. 301 No. 2

Written Answers. - Bird Sanctuary.

313.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he is aware that it is proposed to take over the Grange-Kilglass lakes area of County Roscommon as a bird sanctuary and of the objections from local people to this development which will interfere with tourism; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the Wild Birds (Open Seasons) Order, 1977, made by me on 28th July last, an area comprising the Grange and Kilglass Lakes and adjoining lands was excluded from the operation of the open season. This had the effect of establishing a sanctuary, that is a no-shooting area, for wildfowl and other game birds in the area in question. In making the order I had regard to the large measure of local support for a sanctuary which had by then been expressed by a majority of landowners adjoining the lakes and who had been consulted about the proposal. However, as there now appears to be some concern on the part of certain local people about the effects of the establishment of the sanctuary. I do not propose proceeding with its implementation pending further clarification of the matter with local landowners and other interests.
