Vol. 301 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

2.

asked the Taoiseach whether unemployment figures have risen in the week ending 21st October, 1977; and whether the rate of job loss has increased in recent months.

The number of persons on the live register in the week ended 21st October, 1977, was 105,331; this represents an increase of 552 in relation to the previous week. The relative changes in the live register totals in recent months do not support the view that the rate of job loss has increased during this period.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to include in the Official Report a statement giving the live register totals for corresponding dates in July, August and September of this year along with the differences in relation to corresponding dates in the same months of 1976.

Following is the statement:

Whatever about the Parliamentary Secretary's opinion in regard to the past few months, does he foresee a deepening of the unemployment crisis during the coming winter?

Would the Parliamentary Secretary indicate if his party's policy in relation to job creation is being shown in the statistics, or is not most of it——

The Deputy knows that does not arise on the question.
