Vol. 303 No. 7

Written Answers. - Roadside Tree Danger.

303.

asked the Minister for the Environment the authorities responsible for the removal of trees growing along road sides which are dangerous to the public; if he will make an order to have all such trees removed so as to save lives and prevent accidents, especially during storms; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Local authorities have powers under existing law to require the cutting and trimming of trees which may cause obstruction on the road or cause danger by obstructing the view of persons on the road. These powers, however, do not extend to securing the felling, trimming and so on of dead or diseased trees which could be a potential danger to road users especially during storms. The possibility of extending the powers of local authorities in this regard will be appropriate for consideration in connection with future legislation. I have no power under existing law to proceed as suggested by the Deputy.
