Vol. 305 No. 6

Written Answers. - Self-Employed Workers' Tax Returns.

428.

asked the Minister for Finance the percentage of self-employed workers that return income tax forms; and the percentage of such forms that indicate earnings which are at, or below, the total of the tax-free allowances of the individual returning the form.

I understand from the Revenue Commissioners that income tax statistics are not kept in such a manner as would enable the precise information sought by the Deputy to be given. To obtain the information would require a special survey involving a disproportionate expenditure of time and effort. However, the statistics available indicate that approximately 15 per cent of self-employed individuals on whom assessments are raised and whose main source of income is earned income, show earnings at, or below, the total of the personal allowances and reliefs due.
