Vol. 318 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Allowance.

313.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the deplorable standard of living of social welfare recipients, and if he will grant substantial increases to keep these incomes in line with the rapidly rising cost of living.

I do not accept the implications of the Deputy's question. It is the policy of the Government to maintain the living standards of social welfare recipients by regular adjustments of payments at least in line with the cost of living. This has been done in successive budgets and will continue to be done.
