Vol. 318 No. 3

Written Answers. - Phoenix Park (Dublin) Amenity.

388.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that all steps are being taken to restore the Phoenix Park to its original state, following the recent Papal visit, and if not, if he will ensure that the necessary measures are invoked to preserve this natural amenity for the enjoyment of the people.

I am satisfied that every effort is being made to restore the Phoenix Park as far as possible to the state in which it was prior to the Papal visit and that its amenities will be preserved for the enjoyment of the public.

Some works were carried out in connection with the Papal visit which are regarded as improvements to the park and its amenities and these are being retained. They include the culverting of some ditches and the improvements to certain pathways through the park. It has been agreed to retain the car park at the rear of the altar site for the benefit of park users, as it was long felt that there was a need for a centrally located car park.

Proposals have been put forward regarding the retention of the Cross and Vesting Chamber beneath and these are still under consideration. As yet no decision has been taken in the matter.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that any developments contemplated in relation to the Phoenix Park will not operate to infringe this unique natural amenity, and that all steps will be taken to safeguard and protect the open spaces, the wooded areas and the wild life habitation.

I am very conscious of the fact that the natural amenities of the park should at all times be preserved and when contemplating any future developments the protection of the natural character of the park would be a first priority.
