asked the Minister for Defence if it is intended to replace the smaller arms used by the Army; if so, when and the alternative weapons being considered; and if he will make a statement on his predecessor's interview with the press (details supplied) in this regard.

The matter of suitable replacements for the small calibre arms—mainly rifles and sub-machine guns—with which infantry units of the Defence Forces are currently equipped is under active consideration. A decision as to the types to be purchased has not yet been made.

asked the Minister for Defence the number, type, and condition of tanks, APCs and armoured cars in service with (i) the Permanent Defence Forces, (ii) the FCA, (iii) the Irish forces in the Lebanon and (iv) in reserve or in storage, and in relation to vehicles on order, the date they were ordered and when delivery is expected.

In the interests of security, it is not the practice to furnish particulars of the nature requested regarding items of defensive equipment.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the items of equipment or weapons ordered or that it is proposed to acquire in the coming year, when each item was ordered or when an order will be placed and when delivery is expected.

asked the Minister for Defence the present condition of the comet tanks acquired by the Army, if any studies were carried out to modernise these vehicles by fitting new engines and if so, if he will outline the details of such studies.

These tanks which were manufactured in 1944 are obsolete and unserviceable, and cannot be economically repaired.
