Vol. 321 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension Payments.

68.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in the payment of a noncontributory old age pension to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

The applicant's husband in this case is a blind pensioner whose pension includes an increase in respect of her. Since this increase could not be paid concurrently with her pension it was necessary to recall the husband's pension books for adjustment to single rate. This action was carried out on 30 May and a pension book in her own right was issued to the applicant. The general issue of supplementary pension books implementing budget increases precluded an earlier conclusion of the case.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in the payment of a noncontributory old age pension to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

The rate of pension recommended in this case has been paid provisionally pending the local pension committee's decision. There has been no undue delay in processing the claim. The social welfare officer who investigated the case was obliged to verify the amount of the claimant's capital. Here inquiries were necessarily protracted, primarily because of the claimant's reluctance in the first instance to disclose the whereabouts of the capital.
