Vol. 324 No. 8

Written Answers. - Acquisition of Aircraft.

304.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in relation to his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 346 of 21 October 1980 (a) when he expects the examination of requirements to be completed; (b) if he proposes to introduce a Supplementary Estimate this year to cover any of the cost of such aircraft; (c) if he intends to provide funds in next year's Estimate and if he will identify expenditure on aircraft under a separate subhead; (d) if he is aware of the long delays in acquiring such aircraft, especially all-weather helicopters, and if it will be up to three years before such aircraft can be acquired; and (e) if he proposes any short-term measures such as leasing of aircraft in the interim.

I am not in a position at this stage to say when the examination referred to will be completed but I can assure the Deputy that it will be finalised as quickly as possible. A project of this nature is complex and requires detailed planning. The Garda authorities have had discussions already with a number of the interests involved in the sale, leasing and maintenance of aircraft and helicopters but I do not envisage that expenditure will arise this year.

Provision is being made for expenditure in this area in next year's Estimate in a separate subhead. However, as I am aware that there are delays in deliveries of some tyes of aircraft, particularly helicopters, the question of leasing suitable types in the interim is one aspect that is being pursued.
