Vol. 324 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - NESC Report.

3.

asked the Taoiseach whether he has taken steps to arrange for early publication of the NESC Report now that the contents of this report have appeared in the press.

The normal procedures for processing this report have now been completed and I understand that it will be published this week.

Now that the report is in the hands of the Government, according to a newscast at any rate, would the Taoiseach agree that one of the most depressing factors in the report is the forecast of an increase of 14,000 in unemployment between April this year and 1 April next year. As a result I understand the trade unions have been unable to sign this report. Has the Taoiseach any response to this situation?

I suggest that the Deputy would wait until the report is published. I understand that the intention is that NESC will publish it next Friday.

Will the Government be giving a reaction then?

Yes, the Government will be giving a reaction then.

In relation to what the Taoiseach said and in view of the controversy that has arisen about the way in which contents of this report have been leaked, is the Taoiseach in a position to give an undertaking that there will be a separate debate on this report before the House adjourns? Does the Taoiseach think it is worth while to do so?

If the Opposition parties wish to put forward such a proposal I will certainly consider it.
