Written Answers. - Defence Forces Housing Accommodation.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of (1) houses and (2) flats provided by his Department as married quarters for members of the Defence Forces; the amount of the present stock of married quarters built (a) before 1920 and from (b) 1920 to 1930, (c) 1930 to 1940, (d) 1940 to 1950, (e) 1950 to 1960, (f) 1960 to 1970 and (g) 1970 to 1980 to date; the amount of rent charged for each category of dwelling; the number of personnel who are married, differentiating between officers and enlisted ranks; the number of personnel who are at present awaiting Army accommodation and the number of non-military or ex-military personnel in military accommodation; and the amount of living-out allowance paid to each category who live outside the barrack quarters.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:

(1) My Department have a total of 1,166 married quarters. All of them are regarded as houses.

(2) The periods in which the married quarters were built or acquired are as follows: (a) before 1920 — 800; (b) from 1920 to 1930 — 4; (c) from 1930 to 1940 — 12; (d) from 1940 to 1950 — 6; (e) from 1950 to 1960 — 139; (f) from 1960 to 1970 — 42; (g) from 1970 to 1980 — 163.

(3) The amounts deducted from the pay and/or allowances of members of the Permanent Defence Force in authorised occupation of married quarters are as follows:

(b) Non-commissioned officers and privates

(1) Quarters erected prior to 1954: Type A house (1 bedroom), £0.66 a week; type B house (2 bedrooms), £0.96 a week; type C house (more than two bedrooms), £1.30 a week.

(4) 960 officers and 6180 "other ranks" of the Permanent Defence Force are married.

(5) The names of 226 personnel are on waiting lists for married quarters.*

(6) The number of overholders in occupation of married quarters is 115.*.

(7) The pay of members of the Permanent Defence Force includes an element for accommodation. A "living out" allowance as such is not payable.

*The provision of housing is primarily a matter for the local authorities and married soldiers have an equal claim on such housing with other members of the community in the same income group.
