Vol. 327 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Non-Gaeltacht Islands.

3.

asked the Minister for Finance when the Report of the InterDepartmental Committee on the needs of non-Gaeltacht islands will be available.

The Central Development Committee, who report to me, prepared a report in 1977 containing proposals in regard to the inhabited non-Gaeltacht islands off the west coast. The report, which formed the basis of a Government decision on measures to improve life generally on these islands, was prepared for internal use and is not in a form suitable for publication.

I did not fully hear the Minister's reply. He referred to something in 1977. What has happened since then?

The report was circulated to the Government in 1979 and action has been taken in a lot of cases. Would the Deputy like to know where, what and why?

I am aware of the Department of the Environment. What are the other aspects which have been dealt with?

They include the provision of electricity on certain islands, improvement in assistance for housing, water supply and sanitary services and communications. There has also been general economic and community development and quite a lot of the recommendations in the report have been implemented.

Could the Minister now outline the recommendations which have not been implemented and give the reason?

The Deputy asked whether the report would be circulated. The report is not available for publication.

Question No. 4 is for written reply. Question No. 5.

A Cheann Comhairle——

I am sorry, Deputy. I have called Question No. 5.

On a point of order, how are we to get information from the Minister? I freely accepted his offer to give information regarding what has been done on the basis of the report and he knew I would ask him about what has not been done, yet he refused to give the latter information. Is it proper for the Minister to treat the House in this fashion? It is only a farce.

Question No. 5.
