asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the deplorable state of repair of the telephone and telex service in the north Connemara area as outlined in a letter sent to him on 30 March 1982; and if he will indicate the plans his Department have to bring about an immediate improvement of this very important service.

I am aware that the quality of the telecommunications services in the north Connemara area is not satisfactory. The Clifden charge group, which includes Letterfrack exchange mentioned in the letter of 30 March to which the Deputy refers, is served by a co-axial cable to Galway. As I indicated in reply to questions from Deputy Molloy (Official Report Vol. 333 No. 6, cols. 1053-1055), the Clifden-Galway route is served by overhead cable and much of it is over exposed country leaving the cable particularly liable to damage during bad weather. There is, therefore, a high incidence of faults and the number of circuits in use can vary appreciable from time to time. An urgent examination of ways to improve the quality of service has been in progress and will, it is expected, be completed shortly. I will write to the Deputy then.

503.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate the very bad telephone service obtaining in the 256 area of Rathoath, County Meath; and the up-to-date position on this matter.

A fault in the local exchange which affected the service in the area for some days recently has now been repaired. Service should now be satisfactory but if the Deputy will furnish details of any specific complaints I will have them investigated.
