Vol. 335 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Neutrality.

453.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the Taoiseach's welcome decision to lead Ireland's delegation to the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on nuclear disarmament which will be held on 14 June, he will state if he will be making it absolutely clear at that session that Ireland's neutrality remains a fundamental aspect of our foreign policy.

The Taoiseach's decision to lead Ireland's delegation at the UN Special Session on Disarmament confirms the importance that this country traditionally attaches to the search for agreement on disarmament as a step towards a durable world peace. The role that Ireland has played in United Nations discussions on disarmament and particularly on questions of nuclear disarmament has been enhanced by our position as a state which is not a member of a military alliance and thus neutral. It is the intention of this Government to ensure that this situation is maintained and that Ireland can continue to fulfil this constructive role in the United Nations.
