It will be necessary to carry out additional cabling work before further lines can be provided for the company. Because of the volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the 01 area it is unlikely that the necessary cabling can be completed before the end of the year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the serious position which the residents of the Black Valley, Beaufort PO, Killarney, County Kerry are in because there is no telephone service in the valley; whether he considers it feasible to provide a radio service for the residents by way of a radio telephone link-up with the Black Valley; if so, the approximate cost of providing this service; and if he will make a statement on the matter having regard to the fact that this problem has been under consideration for a considerable number of years.

I am aware of the position regarding applications for telephone service in the Black Valley, County Kerry.

Because of the location and the nature of the terrain, provision of telephone service by normal means, i.e. pole route and overhead wires, would be extremely difficult and costly. There would also be serious problems regarding maintenance. In any event it is not at all certain that necessary wayleave permission would be forthcoming in view of the scenic nature of the countryside.

Provision of service by means of radio links is considered feasible. The capital cost would be in the region of £75,000 to £100,000 depending on the number of applicants accepting service.
