Vol. 338 No. 1

Death of Member. - Expression of Sympathy.

Is le méala mór a chuala Comhaltaí an Tí faoi bhás tobann an Teachta Bill Loughnane an tseachtain seo caite. Ar dheis Dé lena anam uasal dílis.

Bill Loughnane as a Member of Dáil Éireann for 13 years endeared himself to Members on every side of the House. The most sociable of men, the most enjoyable of companions, Bill Loughnane, through the warmth of his personality, through his unfailing good humour and lively wit, made his own special contribution to the atmosphere here in Dáil Éireann and to the conduct of our business. The soul of kindness and compassion, his whole career as a medical doctor and Dáil Deputy told of his constant desire to help not only the poor and disadvantaged but anyone who sought guidance or solace. His loss to the people of Clare in whose interest he never ceased to work both in his profession and as their representative in Dáil Éireann, his loss to Irish political life and to the promotion of Irish traditional music and culture is great indeed. To his widow and to the members of his family I ask you, a Cheann Comhairle, to extend the deepest sympathy of the Members of Dáil Éireann.

I want to add to what the Taoiseach said that Deputy Loughnane was a lively, entertaining and individualistic Member of this House who had friends in all parties and enemies in none, whatever disagreements many and all parties may have had with some of his political views. All in this House will miss his cheerful personality. I wish that our sincerest sympathy be conveyed to his wife and to his family.

I wish to join with the leader of the Fine Gael Party in expressing the condolences of the Labour Party on the passing of Deputy Loughnane. He was a Member of this House who could command friends, and indeed did, on all sides of the House. It has already been well and truly commented by those who have written of his passing that he will be missed in this House. He was a strong worker for the people of County Clare. He was a man of strong views but he did not hold back on his views. Personally I regret his passing.

On behalf of The Workers Party I would like to be associated with the vote of sympathy to the widow of the late Deputy Loughnane.

Members rose in their places.
