Vol. 340 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Costais Taistil ar Bhusanna Scoile.

33. D'fhiafraigh

den Aire Oideachais an bhfuil sé ar eolas aici go bhfuil éagóir mhór á déanamh ar pháistí na Gaeltachta i negeall ar na costais taistil atá anois á n-íoc ar na busanna scoile; agus an mbeadh sí sásta deireadh a chur leis an scéim íocaíochta sna ceantair Ghaeltachta ar fad.

Ní deintear idirdhealú idir daltaí sa Ghaeltacht agus daltaí taobh amuigh den Ghaeltacht i gcás na síntiús atá dá n-éileamh ó thuismitheoirí i leith costas na scéime scoiliompair. Níl sé soiléir dom mar sin go bhfuil aon éagóir á déanamh ar pháistí na Gaeltachta.

Is oth liom nach féidir liom eisceacht faoi mar atá á iarraidh ag an dTeachta a dhéanamh.

Tá éagóir mhór á déanamh ar pháistí na Gaeltachta agus ba cheart cás faoi leith a dhéanamh maidir le páistí na Gaeltachta sna scéimeanna seo.

It would be very difficult to make distinctions between the Gaeltacht areas and outside. Representing, as I do, a rural constituency, the Deputy will be well aware that a strong case can be made for schools within the Gaeltacht area but an equally strong case can be made for schools outside the Gaeltacht boundaries. If concessions were confined to Gaeltacht schools there would be a demand for similar concessions throughout the country. I am sorry I cannot accede to the Deputy's request.

An bhfuil an tAire sásta dul i gcomhairle le hAire na Gaeltachta agus iarraidh air cuidiú airgid a thabhairt do pháistí na Gaeltachta maidir leis na costais seo a íoc.

Would the Deputy oblige me by repeating the question?

An mbeidh an tAire sásta dul i gcomhairle le hAire na Gaeltachta agus iarraidh air cuidiú airgid a thabhairt do pháistí na Gaeltachta leis na costais seo a íoc.

I am not aware of the Minister for the Gaeltacht making money available. I am not aware of his involvement.

An bhfuil an tAire sásta dul i gcomhairle leis. Ta sé féin sa Ghaeltacht.

I will consider the matter.

If children in the Gaeltacht area I represent produce tomorrow morning a written contract with the Department of Education which states that they have free transport from September 1982 to June 1983, what will the position be?

If they give me some certification that they have a contract for free transport I will have a look at it. I cannot give a definite commitment at this stage but I will have the matter examined. I am not aware that they have transport on a contractual basis of that sort.

That is the most heartening news I have heard. The children have tickets stating that transport is available to them free of charge from September until June. If these tickets are presented tomorrow to the inspectors or the drivers, can I take it that the children will receive free transport?

I cannot give any assurance of that sort. The Deputy asked whether I would consider the matter if he presented the contract document to me and I said I would do so. I did not give any commitment and the Deputy should not misconstrue what I am saying.

This very definitely seems to be another question. It is a general question arising from a confined question. Question No. 34.
