Vol. 340 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Santry Stadium (Dublin) Development.

18.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is proposed to continue the development of Santry Stadium, County Dublin.

Consideration has been given to the further development of the Morton Stadium, Santry, by the stadium's management committee, which is representative of my Department, Dublin County Council, Dublin Corporation and the Clonliffe Harriers Club. I understand that plans for the provision of changing and ancillary facilities are in course of preparation and will be considered, when available, by the management committee. As the committee's proposals have not yet been finalised, I am not in a position to make a statement on the continuation of the development of the Morton Stadium.

Did the Minister say that on receipt of these submissions, which will cover stage 2 of the development, he might be able to provide some money for Santry Stadium?

I am waiting for this report and then I will have the matter considered but it would be impossible for me to give an indication of the contribution at this time. I will be considering the matter in the not too distant future.

Is the Minister saying he will be in a position to offer some assistance this year?

I am not making any commitment of that sort.

If not, would the Minister accept that it is a retrograde step because this is the only stadium which could be regarded as a national stadium and it is a pity we are not moving forward in that area?

I will bear that in mind when the contribution to be made is being decided, but at this stage I cannot give a definitive answer to the Deputy along those lines.
