Written Answers. - Water Supply Schemes.

306.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will immediately approve a grant for a group water supply scheme (details supplied) in County Roscommon.

Roscommon County Council were notified by my Department on 9 instant that a special contribution of £52,000 by the county council towards the cost of increased pipe sizes requested by the county council would rank for loan and State subsidy. Tenders for the scheme are being reviewed by my Department's inspector with a view to determining a firm estimate of the overall cost for the purpose of allocating State grants to the group at the earliest possible date.

The design and design data in respect of this scheme were received in my Department on 27 October 1983. Certain details of the design require clarification and the Department's local inspector is to discuss these with the design engineer. When these matters are clarified Roscommon County Council will be asked to examine and approve the design, if in order. I cannot say, at this stage, when the certificate of approval for the scheme will issue.

This scheme which will serve 12 houses is dependent on the construction by Roscommon County Council of the extension of the North Roscommon regional water scheme to Monasteraden on the County Sligo border.

On 1 November 1983 I approved this extension and a loan of £113,000 has been sanctioned for the direct labour project, on which construction has commenced. It is hoped that water will be available from this extension in October 1984.

However, the group have also submitted proposals to my Department for the development of a local borehole to be used as a source of supply for the scheme until water is available from the regional scheme. The group have been asked to submit to my Department a bacteriological analysis report on the borehole.

In the circumstances, I am not at present in a position to indicate when this group scheme may be approved.

As this scheme is an extension from the proposed Corrocoguile group water scheme the trustees of the latter scheme have been asked to give their written consent to the extension. In the circumstances I cannot at present say when the extension may be approved.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he received the preliminary report on Loughrea regional water supply scheme, major trunk mains and reservoirs to the rural areas/stage two; and when he will approve the preliminary report.

The preliminary report for the overall Loughrea regional water scheme was submitted by Galway County Council to my Department in February 1977, together with a request for approval to prepare contract documents for stage 1 of the scheme. This approval issued to Galway County Council on 9 January 1978. There are no proposals to prepare contract documents for stage 2 before my Department.
