Vol. 347 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leitrim Sewerage Schemes.

8.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of sewerage schemes that have been sanctioned for County Leitrim in the last five years; and whether he considers that County Leitrm is getting its share of spending under the annual capital programmes in this area.

Contract documents have been approved for two sewerage schemes in Leitrim in the past five years. These schemes are Drumshambo sewerage scheme, which was approved in February 1981 and is now nearing completion, and Mohill sewerage scheme which I recently approved. The amount of capital which any local authority receives under the sanitary services programme is determined primarily by the amount of expenditure on schemes in progress and so reflects both the initiatives taken by the local authority in the formulation and planning of schemes and the degree of priority which particular schemes have commanded in the allocation of resources at national level from time to time. While I have no reason to believe that the needs and proposals of Leitrim County Council received less than full consideration in this respect, I can assure the Deputy that I will give full consideration to those schemes which have not yet been approved as circumstances allow.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he will sanction the construction of Dromod sewerage scheme, County Leitrim; when sanction was sought for the development of the scheme; if this application was submitted with a number of other schemes; and if the schemes were submitted in order of priority.

As the reply includes a tabular statement, I propose to circulate it with the Official Report. Preliminary proposals for 13 village sewerage schemes in County Leitrim including the Dromod sewerage scheme were submitted to my Department by Leitrim County Council in May 1976. The proposals were grouped by the council into three priority categories as follows:

Group 1

Group 2

Group 3

Cloone

Fenagh

Killargue

Dromod

Glenfarne

Rossinver

Drumsna

Newtowngore

Jamestown

Rooskey

Keshcarrigan

Leitrim

Lurganboy

While I am not in a position at this stage to say when the Dromod scheme can be sanctioned I can assure the Deputy that I will continue to keep the matter under review as circumstances allow.
